Robert Larkin (b. 1960) is an American multidisciplinary artist who divides his home and studio practice between Southern California and San Casciano dei Bagni, SI Italy. He holds an MFA from the California College of the Arts and a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute, where he was an Osher Merit Scholar.
Larkin is best known for exploring identity, time, and mortality with a poignant sense of humor and irony. While his practice spans text, sculpture, and installation, it remains fundamentally rooted in a collage-based approach. Though aesthetics and materiality choices are critical to his work, Larkin invites viewers to look beneath the humor and engage with an often obsessive, and self-referential portrait.
“Artist or not, and if they like it or not, everything a person makes is a self portrait.” - Robert Larkin
Engaging with Larkin’s art typically evokes the feeling that it’s all fun and games, until it’s not.
