Fake It Till You Break It,
2023
claw hammer, smiley face stickers, edition of 8
Fake it until you break it, explores feigned happiness and the limitations of patience. Using pop art aesthetics, the repetition of the smiley face stickers exemplifies a type of performative joy. At first glance these hammers seem fun and easy to look at. However, the plastic happiness only masks the object’s inherent purpose, to hit things and hit them hard. Bringing these two elements together represent repressed anxiety and the possibility of violence. Fake it until you break it reminds the viewer that patience has a limit and that it is probably best not to test it.
